Cultural Arts Days
The students at Biglerville Elementary explored a variety of experiences centered on different cultures from Asia. From music and dance to food and art, the students got to spend time at each station and learn more about some of the unique customs and traditions from the area.
Kindergarten and 1st grade artists explored Sumi-e painting, a style of painting unique to both Japan and China. The 2nd and 3rd grade artists spent some time learning about the origins of Pokémon and developing their own Pokémon character cards. In the music world students played Balinese musical games about common Balinese activities like fishing & mango picking. Students explored some new, yet familiar activities during their PE time! Students had the opportunity to use diabolo, a two-handed Chinese yo-yo. They also learn different types of jumping skills, using a traditional Chinese jump rope. In the Library students heard Folk Tales from different Countries throughout Asia, as well as played board games such as Chinese Checkers and Tangrams. The High School Culinary Class made Rice Pudding for the students to try, and while at this station, a wealth of artifacts gathered from different countries throughout Asia were shared and explained. |

AiR at Biglerville Elementary
The Artist in Residence Program (AiR) is a ten-day experience for our core group of
third grade students. During this time, a guest teaching artist comes to our school to
present authentic lessons from a different culture. The lessons are focused on a
specific art form. This year we are happy to announce that our lessons will include the
folk dances of India. Our teaching artist is Rasmita Amin and she teaches dance in
both York and Lancaster Counties. In addition, Rasmita will be adding Yoga as well as stories
and information about the different regions of India to her lessons.
The Artist in Residence Program has been offered through our elementary schools for
more than twenty years through the generosity of sponsors. This year we are very
grateful for the continued support of not only our PTA/PTO organizations but the
Cultural Alliance of York. Without these groups the Fine Arts Team would not be able to
continue to provide these incredible experiences for our students.
Our AiR program at Biglerville Elementary runs from Oct.10 to Oct. 24, with a
culminating program the evening of the 24th in the Biglerville Elementary School gym at 7:00PM.
